Jonathan Hemlock, art professor, mountaineer, and former government assassin, is pressured into taking one final assignment. He must accompany an international climbing team up the Eiger's North Face in Switzerland.

Clint Eastwood directed and stars in the film, alongside George Kennedy, Vonetta McGee, Jack Cassidy, and Thayer David. The film is based on Trevanian's 1972 novel.

The music was composed by John Williams, and Eastwood performed several of the climbing stunts himself. The film is approximately 129 minutes long. George Kennedy plays Hemlock's friend Ben Bowman, and parts of the film were shot on the Eiger's North Face.
